Managing Extreme Weather Events in Stormwater Retention Tanks and Inlet Works

Around the globe peak screenings loads generated due to extreme weather events can strain stormwater and sewage networks. This includes both hydraulic and solids loadings, as well as gross pollutants. Depending on the water management strategy, many parts of the globe rely on stormwater retention basins to manage these peak loads.

Recently in Spain, HUBER provided solutions to three major projects with the purpose of managing peak screenings load during extreme wet weather events. Two of these projects included coarse screenings removal at stormwater retention basins, the other was for the installation of heavy-duty trash screens at the inlet of Madrid’s largest sewage treatment plant, Edar SUR.

The installations included the RakeMax® multi rake bar screens and TrashMax® coarse screens.

Project Highlights

• Madrid-Butarque stormwater basin was fitted with 18 x HUBER RakeMax® Screens
• Madrid-Arroyofresno stormwater basin was fitted with 6 x HUBER RakeMax® Screens
• Edar Sur WWTP in Madrid was fitted with 5 x HUBER TrashMax® screens

RakeMax® and TrashMax® are heavy duty coarse screens that can be used for removing trash, coarse material, rags, logs, and other items. These screens can be installed at raw water intakes, sewage treatment plants and stormwater retention basins.
